Jennifer Hudson filled some big shoes at Aretha Franklin‘s funeral on Friday (Aug. 31), roaring a gorgeous performance of the Queen of Soul’s “Amazing Grace.” The powerful tune appears on Franklin’s 1972 album of the same name, stretching over 10 minutes long — and Hudson nailed it with bluesy, emotional vocals.
Hudson has a special connection with the late icon. At Clive Davis’ pre-Grammys party this year, the songstress performed a medley of Franklin’s tunes, and Davis announced that the Queen of Soul handpicked Hudson to play her in an upcoming biopic.
Franklin died on Aug. 16 at age 76 of pancreatic cancer.
