Black-ish star Jenifer Lewis is wearing athleisure on the red carpet — not for comfort, but to make a political statement.
Lewis chose not to wear a designer gown to the Emmys, opting instead to don Nike in support of its latest campaign with former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick. He released the campaign, “Believe in something. Even if it means sacrificing everything #JustDoIt” on September 3, followed by a video to inspire “crazy” dreamers.
By choosing to sport the athletic apparel, Lewis is making a statement in support of the Black Lives Matter movement, with Kaepernick sparking conversation by kneeling during the National Anthem as an NFL player. Lewis wore a red sweatshirt with the Nike logo and check mark, as she walked the carpet with Deon Cole (Black-ish).
Though both Kaepernick and Nike’s campaign are controversial, the NFL said they stand by the ad, with a rep saying, “The National Football League believes in dialogue, understanding and unity.”
