Juliette Lewis has joined the cast of the live-action adaptation “Jem and the Holograms.”
Lewis, who most recently starred in “August: Osage County,” joins Aubrey Peeples, Stefanie Scott, Aurora Perrineau and Hayley Kiyoko, who have been cast as Jem and her bandmates the Holograms. THR previously reported that Ryan Guzman will play the love interest, Rio.
The film, which is directed by Jon M. Chu, is based on the popular Hasbro animated series from the 1980s, which followed Jerrica Benton and her alter-ego, Jem, who fronted the band the Holograms. The film is being described as a modern take on the mysterious pop star and will follow the band through Los Angeles on a music-driven adventure.

Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Productions, Scooter Braun Productions and Chu are producing the project. Universal Pictures and Hasbro Studios are co-financing “Jem and the Holograms,” with Universal distributing worldwide.
Lewis’ character is being kept under wraps for now, but the project is already shooting in L.A. and has been giving updates to its fans on its Tumblr.
Lewis is a good fit for the musical film, as she’s had her own music career along with her acting work. She fronted the band Juliette and the Licks until 2009, when she launched a solo career with the album “Terra Incognita.”
Lewis, who was nominated for an Oscar and a Golden Globe for her role in Martin Scorsese’s “Cape Fear,” most recently starred in indies “Hellion” (which premiered at Sundance) and “Kelly & Cal.” She’s repped by UTA and Untitled Entertainment.
