Friends is getting a reunion special this year, and now the sitcom’s famous theme song, “I’ll Be There for You” by The Rembrandts, has a new lockdown-themed revision too.
Irish singer-songwriter JC Stewart filmed a new satirical version inspired by his constant fridge-opening and Tiger King-binging quaran-routine and posted it to his Instagram earlier this month with the tagline “If they filmed Friends in 2020.”
Although the iconic theme song’s first couple of lines remained the same, Stewart restructured the words midway to precisely describe what’s going on with everyone’s lives during the COVID-19 pandemic. “So no one told you life was gonna be this way/ Your life’s a joke, you’re broke, your love life’s DOA/ It looks like we’ll be inside for a year/ Or it might only be a day, a week or months — it’s really not clear/ So I’ll be here all day, looking into the fridge/ I’ll be here all day just binging Tiger King/ I’ll be here all day, and you will be too,” he croons while playing the acoustic guitar.
Friends star Jennifer Aniston gave the remix her stamp of approval when she shared his 30-second clip on her Instagram story Tuesday (April 28) with her nearly 33 million followers, giving Stewart a lot of buzz. But the celebrity praise doesn’t stop there: Nina Dobrev also shared it with her nearly 20 million followers on her Instagram story, claiming, “This might be the greatest (and most accurate) thing to come out of the quarantine.” And in a bold statement, the 23-year-old artist took to his account to capture the highlights of his star-studded day and to shout out the Friends actress.
“Just to recap, today Jennifer Aniston shared my thing, shared my video and I got on the [BBC] Radio 1 playlist… and Jennifer, let’s get married,” he proposed in one of the videos.
