Jason Derulo has scored another Top 20 hit this year with “The Other Side,” the lead single from his upcoming “Tattoos” album, which has peaked at No. 18 on the Hot 100. “Tattoos,” Derulo’s third studio album, follows hits like “Whatcha Say,” “In My Head” and “Don’t Wanna Go Home” — as well as a catastrophic injury that made him reevaluate his entire career.
Derulo recently stopped by the Billboard studios to perform “The Other Side” and discuss how breaking his neck last year changed his identity prior to the Sept. 20 release of “Tattoos.” Watch the Q&A below:
“The reason why I chose the title ‘Tattoos’ is because tattoos are permanent, and they are a piece of art,” Derulo says. “We put them on our bodies, and they remain on our bodies for the rest of our lives. And that’s what this album is — every single song is a part of my life that will never go away.”
Along with “The Other Side,” Derulo has previewed “Tattoos” with “Talk Dirty,” which features a guest spot from 2 Chainz. Derulo never thought that the follow-up to 2011’s “Future History” would come after seven months in a neck brace, but the pop star says, “It’s crazy to think that all of this could have been gone in an instant, but to come back and receive all this love on ‘The Other Side’ is truly incredible.”
