J-pop singer-songwriters Ken Hirai and Aimyon joined forces on a new single called “Kaibutsu-san” and shared the music video on Monday (April 6).
The title of the distinctively catchy song, which Hirai wrote with the “Marigold” songstress in mind, roughly means “Ms. Monster” in English. The lyrics describe the frustrations, ambivalence and longings of an unrequited crush from a woman’s point of view, culminating in a chorus that wishes those negative feelings, as well as the person feeling them, would simply disappear.
The vividly colored, yet unsettling visuals are by Yusuke Tanaka, who has directed many unique music videos by various J-pop acts, including Hirai, Sakanaction and Perfume. He said the concept of the “Kaibutsu-san” video was to express the woman’s mixed feelings through a tense game of “Red Light Green Light” taking place in a setting evoking a Surrealist painting.
