Hot on the heels of their sold-out <a href=”/articles/news/international/8257608/japan-glay-taiwan-mayday-concert-taipei-arena”>Taipei Arena show</a>, veteran Japanese rockers <a href=”/music/glay”>GLAY</a> hit the AsiaWorld-Expo Hall 10 in Hong Kong for the 900th concert of their career.
The band returned to this venue for the first time in five years, bringing its hits-heavy Springdelics set packed with songs old and new for the 5,000 local fans who had waited a long time to see them live again.
Like their successful Taiwan outing, the foursome opened the show with “The Other End of the Globe,” the first song from their latest studio album, Summerdelics, and went on to perform other songs from the album along with classic hits including “SOUL LOVE,” “HOWEVER” and “BELOVED.”
Fans sang along to the lyrics, even though the songs were performed in Japanese, but frontman TERU made sure everyone was in on the excitement by addressing the crowd in the local language throughout the show.
Before performing “Anata To Ikite Yuku,” the band’s latest hit ballad from 2017, TERU explained the intent behind the lyrics to the audience: “The theme of this song is about a wedding, but the ‘anata (you)’ isn’t just the second person, but also includes fathers and mothers and even grandparents.” The translated lyrics were displayed on the screen during the performance as well.
After the main set, GLAY returned to the stage and kicked off the five-song encore with one of its biggest hits, “Yuuwaku.” The final song of the evening was “I’m in Love,” and Hong Kong fans joyously sang along in unison as if to celebrate their favorite band’s milestone concert.
GLAY will be celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2019.
