Popular J-pop band back number’s new song “Daifuseikai” will be the theme song for Gintama The Movie 2, the sequel to the highest-grossing live-action film of 2017 in Japan.
“Daifuseikai,” meaning roughly “the exact wrong answer” in Japanese, was written specifically for the film and is the follow-up to the band’s previous single, “Mabataki,” which became the No. 8 song on Billboard Japan’s 2018 mid-year song chart after being released in November 2017. “Mabataki” was also a movie theme song.
Gintama is a long-running comedy/action comic serialized in the Weekly Shonen Jump magazine, and the live-action adaptation directed by Yuichi Fukuda features Shun Oguri, Masaki Suda and Kanna Hashimoto in the starring roles.
The first film released last year drew 1.51 million people to theaters just 14 days after its release and grossed over 2 billion yen — about 18 million USD — at the box office.
The band’s frontman Iyori Shimizu commented that it was an honor for the band to be asked to write a song for the sequel, as the members are all longtime fans of the comic: “It occurred to us that we’ve been reading Gintama every week in Jump ever since the series began,” he said. “So it felt a bit embarrassing, like writing a song about friendship for someone who’s been our friend for the past 14 years. But we were really glad and had fun writing it.”
Gintama The Movie 2 will be released in Japanese theaters Aug. 17. Watch the trailer here:
