Janelle Monae’s wonderfully weird music video for new track “Dance Apocalyptic” includes an interlude in which a zombie attacks the R&B singer, and ends with Monae riding off with a biker gang called the Four Horsemen. The craziest thing in the video, however? Monae actually wears her hair down for most of the clip!
Fans of the uptempo soul cuts on Monae’s “The ArchAndroid” album should dig “Dance Apocalyptic,” which rattles off some lyrical shots at “poor shattered little lonely men” atop a steady rhythm and punchy guitar lick. The video, directed by is essentially an end-of-the-world funk freak-out, with Monae and her backing band shimmying onstage while eternally abiding by her black-and-white aesthetic.

“Dance Apocalyptic” was previewed last week in a 28-second video teaser, on the same day Monae announced that her sophomore album, “The Electric Lady,” will be released on Sept. 10. The full-length will feature Erykah Badu on the single “Q.U.E.E.N.” as well as collaborations with Prince and Miguel.
“We took our time to work on it,” Monáe told Billboard in her cover story last month. “We felt a shift in the world … a shift in our music and freedom, with life and politics and where we are as a society. Every time is not always the right time for you to come out with something.”
