To fans and supporters, Janelle Monáe is a portrait of classic style and female empowerment, but like many, she grew up shopping at common American brands in malls with her working class family — one of those brands being the Gap.
For this year’s Meet Me in the Gap holiday campaign, the “Yoga” songstress leads a diverse group of Gap-clad choirs, families, models and influencers harmonizing to a soulful rendition of “You Got What I Need” by Freddie Scott. She also fronted a holiday campaign for the 48-year-old brand back in 2008.
The 31-year-old humbly recalled memories of her school days and loving family hand-me-downs, one of which was a grey Gap hoodie given to her by an older cousin. “I remember wearing it all the time for years,” Monáe told Billboard Style. “I have a very organic relationship with Gap, so [the campaign] just felt right.”
“As a country and as Americans, we’re strongest when we come together,” Janelle expressed. “I hope that when people watch [the commercial] they feel encouraged to meet each other; to talk; to listen — around the holidays, especially, and beyond.”
Gap’s previous ad campaign featured Cher and Future singing Sly & the Family Stone’s 1969 classic “Everyday People.”
