In a 12-minute behind-the-scenes video for Jamie xx’s “Gosh,” viewers can follow the process of filming the stunning video. The visual — filmed in Tianducheng, China — follows the main character as Chinese teenagers with bleached-blond hair seem to follow him through the city.
The city itself features a 354-foot-tall replica of the Eiffel Tower that was featured in the video.
Director Romain Gavras (M.I.A.’s “Bad Girls,” Jay Z and Kanye West’s “No Church in the Wild”) tells Dazed Magazine that the whole time he was in Tianducheng, he felt like he was “on acid.” “You walk out on the street and you’re in fake Paris and you have Chinese kids saying hello. The whole thing is very f—ing meta, very weird, and very confusing.”
The music video, which is free of CGI and 3-D effects, features a 400-person cast of teenagers from the Xiaolong Martial Arts School Disciples.
In the video below, watch as the cast get their hair dyed blond and rehearse for the synchronized running sequence.
