Just a few short weeks after releasing the release of his first single since 2014 “Wild Love,” James Bay will be hitting the Saturday Night Live stage as the musical guest on March 10.
On Wednesday, the crooner released the rock-influenced “Pink Lemonade” and announced the May 18 release date of his sophomore album Electric Light. Surely, both releases will be the songs he performs on the hit sketch comedy show.
Beyond his rich vocals, here are five things we want to see from Bay’s Saturday Night Live appearance.
A drum solo
The day before he released “Pink Lemonade,” Bay took to Instagram to post a video of himself playing the quick tempo drum beat of the tune. He clearly has a talent in the instrument, so why not let the crooner take a step away from the guitar and hit a couple cymbals and snares during the performance?
The new short hair in all its glory
Bay’s signature look during the time of his debut record Chaos and the Calm four years ago was long locks tamed by a black fedora. Back in November, he debuted a new chop at the MTV European Music Awards. While the new look came as a shock to fans, the SNL performance can be a prime opportunity to prove that the loss of hair doesn’t mean the loss of talent.
An appearance from the Stanger Things cast
In the music video for “Wild Love,” Stranger Things star Natalia Dyer makes a tender love connection with Bay across a crowded club. Perhaps on Saturday, SNL can take it a step further by inviting the entire cast of the Netflix hit series to partake in a skit with Bay. Or maybe they can be part of the performance, providing background vocals for the angelic chorus. Hopefully no demogorgons will grace the stage.
Purple butterflies everywhere
Possibly the most eye catching aspect of the “Wild Love” clip was the purple butterflies surrounding Bay and Dyer as they share an intimate, passionate face-to-face moment. For Bay’s SNL rendition, we can only hope that butterflies will return to flood the studio and provide the perfect ambiance for such a contemplative track.
James Bay in an Iron Man suit
In the hilarious promo for Saturday’s episode, host Sterling K. Brown reveals just how big of an SNL fan he is by showing off his toy version of the theme song, complete with a cardboard New York City and action figures representing the cast members. While Bay himself doesn’t physically appear in the promo, he is represented in Brown’s fictional theme song in the form of an Iron Man figurine with a black fedora. The singer should definitely take inspiration from the promo and wear an Iron Man costume for his “Pink Lemonade” performance.
