When The Libertines reunited in London’s Hyde Park this past summer, the 65,000-strong crowd freaked out to the point where 38 fans were injured and eight hospitalized. Clearly, fervor over the beleaguered British rockers hasn’t subsided since they first called it quits in 2004.
Now, Pete Doherty has revealed to French radio that Jack White offered to produce the band’s tentative reunion album. Fans can understandably freak out a bit more.
Doherty’s bandmate, Carl Barat, recently told NME that a follow-up to their 2004’s self-titled album has “always” been part of their plan. And according to a new interview with Doherty, fellow garage-punk enthusiast Jack White has expressed interest in producing it.

“Jack White says he’d like to do it,” Doherty said, but cautioned, “I don’t want to get too hopeful.”
Given the band’s mercurial history, even confirmation of a third Libertines album is a far cry from confirmation. But if it does happen, White — who has produced excellent comeback efforts from Loretta Lynn and Wanda Jackson — is a promising start.
