The Dead Weather began a short run of special preview shows over the weekend in preparation for its first North American tour next month.
The all-star quartet dropped in on the Magic Stick in band members Jack White and Dean Fertita’s home town of Detroit on Friday, announcing the show that morning online. Several hundred fans, disappointed by the Detroit Red Wings’ Stanley Cup Finals loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins earlier in the evening, turned out for the 55-minute set that featured 10-songs from the Dead Weather’s forthcoming debut album, “Horehound” (due out July 14), plus a cover of Them’s “You Just Can’t Win” that’s the B-side of the group’s latest single, “Treat Me Like Your Mother.”
White continued to hold the drum chair throughout the show, letting Queens of the Stone Age’s Fertita and, occasionally, the Kills’ Alison Mosshart handle guitar parts, though he did strap on a six-string for one song, “Will There Be Enough Water,” while sharing the center stage vocal mic with Mosshart. Bassist Jack Lawrence (the Raconteurs, the Greenhornes, Blanche) took over on drums for that number.
The Dead Weather played in Toronto on Sunday and will perform Wednesday at the Roxy Theatre in Los Angeles, as well as on the online From the Basement series (www.ftblive.com) on June 22. The group also has shows line up for June 24th in London and June 29th in Paris before starting a North American tour on July 13th in Washington, D.C.
