Jack Johnson may be best known as a singer/songwriter, but he’s also a veteran surfer and filmmaker. The artist’s many passions come together in the film “Thicker Than Water,” originally released in 2000 but making its DVD debut Nov. 25 via Johnson’s Brushfire label. An accompanying soundtrack arrives the same day, featuring five exclusive tracks.
“Thicker Than Water” was filmed over an 18-month trip through the South Pacific, North Atlantic and the Bay of Bengal. Surfers such as Kelly Slater and Rob Machado are interviewed about their passion for the sport, while Johnson and colleagues such as Dan, Chris and Keith Malloy are seen riding waves in Ireland, India and Australia, among other locales.
The DVD is augmented with 20 minutes of unused footage, a photo gallery and commentary from Johnson and the Malloy brothers.
As for the 14-track soundtrack, it sports two newly recorded cuts: Johnson and G. Love’s “Rainbow,” and Johnson’s acoustic rendition of “Holes to Heaven.” Surfer Todd Hannigan penned the soundtrack’s title track.
Johnson is taking a break from the road but will resume touring Nov. 4 in Sydney. His latest studio album, “On and On,” debuted in May at No. 3 on The Billboard 200 and has sold 684,000 copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan.
