There are mystery producers who wear helmets and color-coordinated outfits to hide their faces, then there are mystery artists who literally say nothing, post nothing, and otherwise don’t even exist other than through the music.
iZNiik is the latter to an extreme. Good luck finding anything about this person. Even iZNiiK’s Twitter is a ghost town. When it comes to the music, it sounds like most of the compositions are created from samples, crafting a sound from exterior elements to mirror the creator’s emotions and personality. iZNiik’s first release, EP 1, plays like a futuristic, edgier version of The Avalanches. Clips of spoken words ripped from movies and interviews and what are probably YouTube videos push the narrative of each track, of which there are five in total.
It opens with the warm scratch of a vinyl record on “guitar,” followed by a very Avalanchian intro clip. It grooves in an easy-going way through warped sounds and spacey beats that’ll have you nostalgic for late ’90s and early 2000s lo-fi hip-hop, deserving DJ Shadow be added to the list of influences that shape this record’s flow.
The EP’s lead single “blue skies” follows with tropical psychedelia and jazzy rhythmic breakdowns. Elements of vaporwave and future funk get sewn into its choppy folds, followed by even wavier textures on “cruel” and rounding out the equally cool, fresh, bizarro-funk of “so easy” and “goodbye.”
It’s a little bit R&B and a lotta bit experimental. Listen to EP 1 below.
