As Irish voters headed to the polls on Friday (May 25) to vote on a referendum that could rewrite the 8th amendment — which greatly restricts a woman’s access to abortion — a number of prominent musicians and actors took to Twitter to urge support for the repeal.
One of the strongest voices in support of the referendum is Niall Horan, who wrote, “Cmon Ireland! This is your day to make another great decision. Please do right by the great women of our nation.”

After previously tweeting that “the 8th amendment prevents nothing but the safety and dignity of our fellow citizens. I hope you’ll join me in granting those in a crisis pregnancy compassionate access to healthcare in Ireland on Friday the 25th of May by voting YES.” Hozier also weighed in, reminding voters to go the polls today.

The referendum is one of the most anticipated, and controversial, in the heavily Catholic nation’s history, as it could roll back rules that currently only allow abortion in the case of a woman’s life being at risk, but not for rape, incest or fatal fetal abnormality. Polling stations opened at 7 a.m. local time with the results expected to be very close after a long, contentious campaign on both sides as the nation is torn between its traditional, conservative Catholic past and a potentially more socially liberal future. If the 8th is repealed, it would allow for abortion without restrictions up to 12 weeks into a pregnancy.

Do the right thing, Ireland.
Women must be free to choose what to do with their own bodies. #repealthe8th #voteYES pic.twitter.com/0tT928Xoku— Piers Morgan (@piersmorgan) May 25, 2018
A vote for the freedom to choose, a vote for women’s rights, a vote for women’s control over their bodies, a vote for women’s health & safety, a vote towards equality. Thinking of Ireland #together4yes #repealthe8th https://t.co/CDNj9KoSGt
