Michel Lambot’s mandate as chairman of European labels body Impala has been extended for another year.
Impala’s chairmanship was open for re-election at the group’s general assembly, held today (June 16) in Barcelona. However, Impala’s members decided to extend for one more year the mandate of Lambot and that of his two vice-presidents – AIM chair Alison Wenham and Naïve co-founder and chairman Patrick Zelnik.
Lambot, who is co-chairman of Brussels-based indie group Play It Again Sam, has been chairman of Impala since its inception in May 2000. He was not expected to seek re-election.
“Our members chose this solution because there are quite a few important priorities for Impala that [Lambot, Wenham and Zelnik] have been working on that are still ongoing,” says Brussels-based Impala deputy general secretary Helen Smith.
Among those issues are the current legal case against the European Commission on the Sony BMG merger, and negotiations with MTV and Apple Computer. “We have taken a fresh look at our priorities and we are moving forward,” she says.
According to Smith, the first hearing before the European Court of First Instance in Luxembourg on the Sony BMG case will likely take place in September.
Impala members will be joined June 17 by representatives from indie organizations around the world for the first meeting of the Worldwide Coalition of Independent Associations.
Participants from Australia, Brazil and the United States, among others, are due to attend. Billboard.biz understands that the meeting will be used to announce formal leadership at the helm of the new body. The coalition was unveiled at MIDEM in January.
In addition, Impala will announce tomorrow (June 17) the inaugural European certifications for its members. About 200 recordings have been certified, including works from artists such as British rap act MIA (XL Recordings), French DJ Laurent Garnier (F Communication), 2 Many DJs and Soulwax (both on PIAS).
Impala’s certification levels are silver (30,000 units), gold (250,000 units), platinum (500,000 units) and double platinum (1 million units).
