Imagine Dragons were right at home rocking the 2014 Billboard Music Awards stage as the Las Vegas rockers brought the harmonic, soaring “Tiptoe” to bear live from Vegas’ MGM Grand Garden Arena tonight (May 18), rather than take their most familiar hit, “Radioactive” out for another spin.
The performance of the “Night Visions” track “Tiptoe,” which found the group playing multiple drums amid a field of white confetti, was just one highlight of a huge night for the band, however. Imagine Dragons are finalists in an amazing 12 Billboard Music Awards categories, including top artist, top duo/group, and top Hot 100 song (for “Radioactive”).

The group is, however, still happy to play “Radioactive,” they told Billboard during rehearsals for the BBMAs.”We didn’t burn out on it,” frontman Dan Reynolds said.

“Seeing ‘Radioactive’ have such life was really important to us because, first and foremost, the band was all about having organic growth,” he explains of the song’s burn up the charts. “We’ve been a band for five years now, and we really wanted everything with our first album — we’d already put out several EPs on our won. — we wanted it to be a slow, long growth.”

Reynolds called the prolonged success of “Radioactive,” which spent a record-breaking 87 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at No. 3, “awesome. I don’t think any of us expected it to have any life like that. It just kept going,” he added with a smile.
