Iggy Pop wants to play the bad guy.
The punk rock legend is teaming with Italian horror director Dario Argento on a project called The Sandman. Iggy would play the title character in the movie, which is the subject of an Indiegogo crowd funding campaign.
Argento, a gore master who shot Suspiria, Deep Red and Tenebrae, is targeting $250,000 for his new film. He’s got Iggy’s full support. “I have been very lucky to work with some cool people making great films. But to make a Christmas movie with the maestro, Dario Argento, that would be a dream come true,” says Iggy in a promotional video. He describes Argento as the “master of Italian horror, the man of strange and beautiful and terrifying films, that always fascinate and terrified me.”

According to the blurb accompanying the campaign, “This Sandman is the real deal, going back to the dark, original German legend. The REAL Sandman was someone who stole the eyes of any children that wouldn’t just close them and go to sleep.”
The Stooges frontman is no stranger to the big screen. He’s had many parts over the years, including a memorable campfire scene in Jim Jarmusch’s 1995 film Dead Man. And it wouldn’t be Iggy’s first time as a villain. The special effects team on Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings films modeled the Gollum character on Iggy’s sinewy physique.
“If I could play the Sandman for Dario, it would make my life complete,” Iggy says in the video. “I hope I haven’t just written my own epitaph.”
Plan are to shoot the film in Ontario, Canada from 2015. So far, more than $10,000 of the goal has been raised with 30 days to go.
