There’s just no stopping the multi-talented Idris Elba at the moment.
Radio Times reports that Elba is planning an album inspired by John Luther, the conflicted police detective he plays in the darkly absorbing BBC crime drama. Luther has just been confirmed to return in a two-part special next year as well as a potential Fox adaptation.
The new Luther-inspired album has the rather ominous working title of Murder Loves John. “I’d like to dissect the idea of someone who has to deal with so much darkness,” Elba said of the album on BBC Radio 4’s Front Row.
“Detectives carry a lot of stuff. They meet someone who’s done something heinous, but they have to have an objective perspective on them until proven,” he said, adding: “That could create some really good songs … and definitely an interesting mood, musically.”
Famed for his acting, Elba is also a noted rapper, DJ and music producer and has collaborated in the past with the likes of Musiq Soulchild and Estelle under the name Driis.
Listen to Five Songs from Idris Elba’s Nelson Mandela Tribute Album, ‘mi Mandela’
This won’t be the first time Elba has been inspired by an acting role he has taken on. Only recently, Elba finished work on Mi Mandela, an album that owed much to his time in South Africa shooting the film Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom in which he portrayed Nelson Mandela.
