With a well-received performance at Austin, Texas’ South By Southwest music festival behind him, Billy Idol is readying for a full scale return to the road next month. He’ll open a North American tour April 8 in Philadelphia and plans to remain out through a May 27 show in Atlantic City, N.J.
Not content to rest on his laurels and work the nostalgia circuit, Idol will be touring behind the release of “Devil’s Playground,” his first new studio album in more than a decade. The set was released today (March 22) via C/S Records/Sanctuary.
The touring band includes guitarist Steve Stevens, an Idol compatriot from his glory years who co-produced and co-wrote several song on the new album. The group is rounded out by Stephen McGrath (bass), Brian Tichy (drums) and Derek Sherinian (keyboards).
Idol will perform Thursday on “Tonight Show with Jay Leno” (NBC) and the next night stage a concert at the Roxy in Los Angeles for the first 500 fans to purchase “Devil’s Playground” at the Sunset Blvd. Tower Records location. An April 15 “Good Morning America” (ABC) appearance is also scheduled.
“Scream,” the first single from “Devil’s Playground,” is No. 26 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. A video recently shot with Jeff Stein, who directed the clip for Idol’s 1983 classic “Rebel Yell,” features images by guerilla artist Shepard Fairey.
