Dexter King announced his retirement as president and CEO of the International Association of Venue Managers (formerly International Assn. of Assembly Managers), to take effect Sept. 4, 2011.
Since joining IAVM in 1976, King has played a key role in the development and the core competencies for the “Public Assembly Facility Management: Principles and Practices” textbook as well as the establishment of the Public Assembly Facility Management School (PAFMS) at Oglebay, the Arena Management Conference (AMC), the Leadership Institute and the University Venue Management Conference (UVMC). King served on the board of directors from 1987 through 1995, culminating as president in 1993-1994.
“I am extremely grateful for the opportunity that I have had during my time with IAVM. But I believe that there is a time and season for change and it is nearing the time for a new president and CEO to take the helm,” King says in a statement. “I am very proud of the IAVM staff for their commitment and dedication to our member needs and I will forever be thankful for their support and cherish the time I spent with them.”
King announced his retirement to IAVM’s membership and board of directors on Oct. 26. The board will meet to address the succession process and ensure a smooth leadership change.
“Over the last decade, King has been an incredible asset to IAVM, leading us through both physical and economic threats. The association has benefited greatly from his leadership and his ability to build rapport and create consensus among his peers. The senior leadership is blessed to have the opportunity to work with King and set the stage for the next decade and our new president and CEO,” says IAVM chairman John Siehl.
