K-pop vocalist Hyolyn returned on Tuesday (Feb. 6), releasing a sentimental pre-breakup track, her first of the new year.
“To Do List” is an acoustic ballad that puts the former SISTAR member’s vocals in the forefront as Hyolyn’s tone alternates between crooning longing and deadpan acceptance. “The last thing to do, my love, is to let you go,” she sings, exploring the emotions that precede a breakup.
The relaxed music video for “To Do List” shows Hyolyn going through her daily to do list. Her day begins in Los Angeles with a cup of coffee and then heading to the studio to work on new choreography and record a song, and eventually leads into a performance. Switching between vibrant shots showing the artist’s more playful side and black-and-white videos emphasizing her work ethic and inner emotions, the video matches the overall stripped back tone of the new song.
“To Do List” is the first of three singles that will be part of Hyolyn’s ongoing Set Up Time project. While not her first song since SISTAR’s end, it is the first tune she’s released sans an accompanied feature rapper, putting her expressive vocals and lyricism front and center.
One of K-pop’s most noted vocalists, Hyolyn rose to fame as a member of SISTAR, with her sultry, expressive tone gaining her much renown. After leaving the groups label Starship Entertainment last year, she has since set up her own management company, Brid?.
