As Hurricane Irma heads to Florida, artists are sending prayers and positive thoughts in anticipation of catastrophic damage to the state.
Irma has already torn through the Caribbean. At press time, the New York Times reports the storm, currently a Category 4 hurricane that is likely to restrengthen to a Category 5 this weekend, is so big that its exact path is “not that important”: all of southern and central Florida could be hit with winds more than 100 miles per hour, and intense storm surges along Florida’s coast are expected.
“Irma is expected to make landfall in Florida as an extremely dangerous major hurricane, and will bring life-threatening wind impacts in much of the state regardless of the exact track of the center,” an update from the National Weather Service confirmed, as of Friday night (Sept. 8).
The NWS’ Key West bureau issued a warning even more critical, in all caps: “THIS IS AS REAL AS IT GETS. NOWHERE IN THE FLORIDA KEYS WILL BE SAFE. YOU STILL HAVE TIME TO EVACUATE.”
