Playboy magazine will honor its late founder on the cover of the November/December 2017 issue in a way that has never been done before in the history of the publication. For the first time ever, the magazine will feature a man alone on the cover, using a 1965 portrait of Hefner by photographer Larry Gordon.
Hefner — who is 39 years old in the picture — will be the eleventh man to ever grace the publication’s cover, but none until now have been featured without a female model present. According to a statement from Playboy, the founder’s Sept. 27 passing was only two days before the issue went to press (it’s unclear what the cover plan was prior to his death). The first six pages will include a piece from Hefner’s son Cooper, as well as a celebration of the magazine mogul’s life.
In an Instagram post revealing the cover, Playboy stated, “In honor of Hugh M. Hefner, our November/December issue celebrates the life of an American icon. The new issue is a prelude to a forthcoming 100+ page special tribute dedicated to the man who changed the world with his visionary magazine and company.”
