Hugh Evans, CEO of the nonprofit Global Poverty Project and co-founder of the Global Citizen Festival, will receive the Humanitarian Award at the 12th annual Billboard Touring Awards.
Evans will receive the honor Nov. 19 during Billboard’s annual awards gala at The Roosevelt Hotel, the event’s home since 2004.
The philanthropist conceptualized and helped launch the Global Citizen Festival in 2012 as a way to encourage activism and pressure world leaders to ramp up financial contributions to good works. (This year at the concert, for example, the European Commission pledged €500 million to aid the Syrian refugee crisis.)
This September’s fest in Central Park coincided with the UN General Assembly meeting in New York and featured a star-studded bill with headlining performances from Pearl Jam, Coldplay, Beyoncé and Ed Sheeran. Evans later told Billboard there were 2 million global “actions” taken on the night of the 2015 festival.
“In an industry filled with people who are dedicated to helping others through the power of music, Hugh Evans stands out for his ability to rally both artists and executives around the common cause of ending global poverty,” comments Ray Waddell, executive director of Content & Programming for Touring & Live Entertainment, Billboard. “For his dedication, hard work, creativity, and the sheer ambition of his vision, we are honored to name Hugh as our 2015 Humanitarian at the Billboard Touring Awards.”
As previously reported, Billboard will close the event by recognizing Bob Seger with the Legend of Live honor, which is awarded to a professional who has had a significant impact on the touring industry. Past recipients include Lionel Richie, Elton John, Neil Diamond, George Strait and Ozzy Osbourne.
In other news, comedian and writer Warren Holstein has been named host of the Billboard Touring Awards, which follows the Billboard Touring Conference and honors top achievers in various categories based on Billboard’s Boxscore chart data.
On the night, the winner of Billboard’s Concert Marketing & Promotion Award will be announced. Nominees for the 2015 award, which highlights the year’s best tour and brand collaboration, are below.
