Hot Since 82 launched his Knee Deep in Sound label six years ago, at the same time he was steadily rising through the global house scene. Today, the artist born Daley Padley is one of the genre’s most consistent names, with Knee Deep in Sound having pumped out equally consistent heat from artists including Richy Ahmed and Steve Bug, along with albums from Christoph and Hot Since 82 himself. Padley’s 2019 LP, 8-Track, amassed 20 million streams.
“The label has grown and evolved over the past six years,” Padley tells Billboard Dance, “but the core ethos remains the same; signing tracks and developing artists that I am passionate about and believe in. I’m completely indebted to all the brilliant artists whom we’ve worked with since 2014.”
On Thursday (April 2), Knee Deep in Sound celebrates its 100th release with a sprawling seven-minute track from the label boss himself. Premiering exclusively on Billboard Dance, “Make Up” is an alluring multi-movement techno anthem tied together by a hooky vocal sample and a melodic breakdown. The track reflects the furthest iteration of the Hot Since 82 sound and the evolution of the label from which it comes as well.
“[The label] has of course changed sonically to reflect my ever evolving tastes and what I’m playing in my DJ sets,” Padley continues. “Another thing that I love about the label is that it allows me to be in control of my own output. My 8-track album was a deeply personal piece of work and it was important to me that it wasn’t rushed and we released it in the right way.”
Padley is currently in the studio working on his third studio LP. In the meantime, hear “Make Up” below.
