When Hot Since 82 started coming to America in 2012, EDM was king and only a few handfuls of black-clad tech heads were coming to check out his sets. Fast-forward to his closing set at the Yuma stage of Coachella 2017, and the giant air-conditioned stage was jam-packed with deep music lovers, smushed at its legal capacity.
“I think the progression that I’ve seen is the EDM stages seem to be dropping off a little bit now and the underground stages seem to be getting a lot busier,” he says. “Especially at EDC Vegas last year, I did it the year before. Let’s say the (underground stage capacity) was 5,000 and maybe there was 3,000 in there. I did it last year, and it was slammed.”
He also touched on his new concept party Labyrinth at Pacha in Ibiza, an idea that came as a means to expand his event lineups and celebrate everything he loves about house and techno. He also touched a bit on the rise of Ushuaia and the retirement of Carl Cox on the famous White Isle of Ibiza.
“It hasn’t soaked in properly yet because I’ve yet to step back on the island and see it disappear so I28 guess it will sink in when I go in a couple weeks time,” he says. “I’m sad that Carl has left his residency as well, I really loved going there on a Tuesday. It was a really eclectic selection of DJs. You could have Green Velvet on the Terrace, you go inside and there’s Fatboy Slim playing. I love how Carl curated the lineup, and I try to take a little bit of that experience and inject it into Labyrinth as well. There’s really no boundaries.”
