‘City’ Sounds
Well before she began work on her Grammy-winning debut album, Norah Jones spent a few months working with New York singer/songwriter Peter Malick, touring the Northeast U.S., and recording with his group. The results of that late 2000 pairing will be released this week via Koch on “New York City,” a five-song EP by the Peter Malick Group featuring Norah Jones.
The set features Jones’ vocals on three Malick originals (“Strange Transmissions,” “Deceptively Yours,” and “New York City (Such a Beautiful Disease),” as well as Magic Sam’s “All Your Love” and Bob Dylan’s “Heart of Mine.”
Jones signed to legendary jazz label Blue Note in early 2001, and recorded her debut set, “Come Away With Me,” later that year. The February 2002 release went on to net her five Grammys, including the prized album of the year award. A few weeks prior to the ceremony, the album spent its first of four non-consecutive weeks at No. 1 on The Billboard 200. Currently No. 9, the title has remained in the tally’s top-10 since, and has sold more than 5.3 million copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan.
