The ‘Mode’ Code
New remixes by Linkin Park’s Mike Shinoda, Colder, Ulrich Schnauss and Goldfrapp can be found on the Depeche Mode collection “Remixes 81-04,” due this week via Reprise. The set was preceded Oct. 19 by the single “Enjoy the Silence,” featuring mixes by Shinoda, Timo Maas and Ewan Pearson.
Depeche Mode’s music has been inextricably linked to remixes from the early days of reworkings by Adrian Sherwood, Daniel Miller and Flood, up through contemporary remixes by Danny Tenaglia, Dave Clarke and DJ Muggs. “It’s an amazing feeling to sit back and listen to such an interesting mix of artists take the spirit of Depeche Mode and add another dimension,” says group member Martin Gore.
A number of tracks featured here were club smashes, including Tenaglia’s 2001 remix of “I Feel Loved” and Francois Kevorkian’s 1990 “Capitol Mix” of “Policy of Truth.”
The group’s music is being absorbed by a new generation of artists, prompting new remixes to be commissioned for the project. “Their music is an inspiration to me, and I am excited for our fans to hear my take on one of my favorite Depeche Mode songs,” says Shinoda. “I always swore blind I’d never do a remix of something I loved so much, but of course, when you’re asked it’s impossible to say no,” Pearson admits.
