The Billboard 200 albums chart was busy with four top 10 entries this week, including a No. 1 arrival from new rapper B.o.B with his “Adventures of Bobby Ray,” which bowed with 84,000 copies according to Nielsen SoundScan. No. 22 – Up 14 – Michael Buble – “Crazy Love” – Most of his catalog was sale priced in the iTunes Store last week for $7.99. This one sold 15,000 (up 21%).
No. 33 – Debut – Sons of Sylvia – “Sons of Sylvia” – No doubt brother trio’s debut of 12,000 helped by its “American Idol” performance last week.
No. 62 – Up 48 – Gogol Bordello – “Trans-Continental Hustle” – After a week of iTunes exclusivity, the physical went to retail and gives the act its best sales week of 8,000.
No. 68 – Re-entry – Shania Twain – “Greatest Hits” – Last week’s “American Idol” mentor profits (7,000; up 251%).
No. 72 – Debut – Travis Cottrell – “Jesus Saves: Live” – Sales resulting from a live broadcast event beamed to churches spur onsite sales for 2009 album (7,000; up 467%).
No. 129 – Down 86 – Original Broadway Cast Recording – “American Idiot” – Though it falls by 61% in its second week (not unusual), it should perk up in sales after the Tony Awards on June 13.
No. 139 – Up 43 – Sick Puppies – “Tri-Polar” – Band Tweeted their fans last week about how album (4,000; up 25%) was sale priced in Amazon’s MP3 store all month for just $5.
No. 162 – Down 76 – Madonna – “Celebration” – Album comes down from its “Glee” high last week. It sells 4,000 (down 42%).
No. 169 – Re-entry – Shakira – “She Wolf” – On April 28 she performed on both “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” and “American Idol.” Album sells 4,000 with a 72% gain.
No. 175 – Re-entry – She & Him – “Volume 1” – Was Amazon MP3 Store’s deal of the day on May 1 for $3.99. It sold 3,000 — up 101%.
No. 199 – Down 102 – Caribou – “Swim” – The set drops by an unsurprising 46% in its second week, yielding the biggest positional drop on the chart this week. Same sort of sophomore slump happens to Airbourne’s “No Guts. No Glory” (90-190; down 47%).
Hot 100
Usher’s “OMG” becomes the superstar’s ninth No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 as it rises 6-1. The song earns dual Airplay and Digital Gainer awards for a second consecutive week, improving by an equal 35% in both radio impressions and download sales.
Other notable moves:
No. 7 – Up two – B.o.B Feat. Eminem and Hayley Williams – “Airplanes” – Title ranks at No. 2 on Hot Digital Songs (181,000 downloads) and debuts at No. 41 on Hot 100 Airplay, the best start by any title on that list since May 2008.
No. 10 – Up two – Jay-Z – “Young Forever” – Song, which sample’s Alphaville’s 80s hit “Forever Young,” ups Jay-Z’s top 10 count to 17, the most by any rapper. Airplay continues to rise, but a top five ranking on Digital Songs (129,000) is currently driving its overall ranking.
No. 15 – Up 11 – Sean Kingston & Justin Bieber – “Eenie Meenie” – Top 40 radio airplay and the usual Bieber fervor push this up the Hot 100 and into the top 10 of the Digital Songs list (17-10, 99,000).
No. 53 – Debut – Glee Cast – “One Less Bell to Answer/A House Is Not A Home” – One of five debuts on the list by the TV troupe, all fueled by digital sales. Of the four debuts from a week ago, only “Like A Prayer” survives (27-96) as second-week sales for the TV tracks normally nosedive.
No. 54 – Up 41 – Miranda Cosgrove – “Kissin U” – Album debut (No. 8 on Billboard 200) sparks digital sales for the “iCarly” TV star’s latest track. Title sells 45,000 (up 82%), leading to largest leap on the Hot 100.
No. 65 – Debut – Shakira – “Gypsy” – Singer’s performance of song on both “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” and “American Idol” last week prompts a 313% digital spike to 30,000 units.
