Fun.‘s “We Are Young,” featuring Janelle Monae, leads the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart for a sixth week. In doing so, it becomes the first song ever to log six weeks of 300,000 or more in digital sales.
With 390,000 downloads sold in the April 2-8 tracking period, according to Nielsen SoundScan, the song returns for a seventh frame atop Hot Digital Songs (2-1). With its latest weekly sum, “Young” has sold at least 300,000-plus for six straight weeks, becoming the first song ever to reach such a total in each of six weeks – consecutive or not. It passes the only other title to rack five weeks of sales of 300,000-plus: Eminem‘s “Love the Way You Lie,” featuring Rihanna broke the barrier for five weeks non-consecutively in July/August 2010.
With its latest sales frame, “Young” passes 3 million in digital sales to date, becoming the only song to reach the milestone this year. In all of 2011, 14 songs sold in excess of 3 million – while, at this point last year, no titles had reached the mark.
In addition to its sales success, “Young” crowns the Radio Songs chart, rising 2-1 with 120 million all-format audience impressions, according to Nielsen BDS. As it tops the tally in its seventh week, the track completes the fastest Radio Songs coronation by a group since Destiny’s Child’s “Survivor” reached the summit in its fifth frame in 2001. “Young” concurrently rises 2-1 on the Alternative Songs airplay ranking. “Young” claims the Hot 100’s top Airplay Gainer badge for a sixth consecutive week, marking the best streak by a group since – guess who – Destiny’s Child won the award with “Independent Women Part 1” for six weeks in a row in 2000.
“Young” additionally remains in charge of the On-Demand Songs chart, where it’s ranked at No. 1 since the list’s launch four weeks ago. It leads this week with 1.1 million on-demand streams, a decrease of 4%, according to BDS, while its overall streaming slips by 2%.
While no new titles enter the top 10, the Hot 100’s top tier sports other notable action.
Gotye‘s “Somebody That I Used to Know,” featuring Kimbra, rises 3-2, fueled by a 28% lift in downloads sold (to 311,000), which results in an identical 3-2 push on Digital Songs. On Radio Songs, the song climbs 16-12 (61 million, up 15%). Its overall streaming gains by 7%, as it holds at No. 2 on On-Demand Songs (1 million, up 8%).
It’s a milestone week for alternative music on the Hot 100. With “Young” and “Somebody” ranking at Nos. 1 and 2, respectively, two Alternative Songs No. 1s – or even top 10s – rank in the Hot 100’s top two spots concurrently for the first time since the Alternative Songs chart launched the week of Sept. 10, 1988.
As previously reported, thanks to the momentum of fun.’s “Young,” Justin Bieber‘s bow last week with “Boyfriend” (521,000) and “Somebody” having sold 311,000 this week, the Digital Songs chart’s top two titles have each sold 300,000 for the first time in successive weeks outside of the Christmas season.
“Boyfriend,” meanwhile, falls 2-5 on the Hot 100 after its impressive debut. The song declines by 43% in digital sales to 295,000. Its radio support surges, however, as it bounds 24-16 (54 million in audience, up 33%) on Radio Songs, passing 2010’s “Baby” (No. 24 peak) for his best rank on the list. The track also enters On-Demand Songs at No. 35 (286,000) following its arrival at a wide variety of streaming services.
At No. 3 on the Hot 100, the Wanted rises from No. 4 with “Glad You Came.” The song elevates 4-3 on Radio Songs (106 million, up 11%) and 8-7 on Digital Songs (209,000, up 24%). It descends 4-5 on On-Demand Songs, but with a 2% improvement to 660,000. As reported Monday, the song takes over atop the Pop Songs airplay chart, becoming the first debut single by a boy band to do so since Hanson‘s “MMMBop” in 1997.
It’s back-to-back U.K. male vocal groups in the Hot 100’s top five, as One Direction zooms 9-4 with “What Makes You Beautiful.” The song claims dual Digital Gainer and Streaming Gainer awards, rising 5-4 on Digital Songs (294,000, up 48%) and 11-7 on On-Demand Songs (611,000, up 28%). On Radio Songs, the cut charges 42-26 (42 million, up 31%). The group performed Saturday (April 7) on NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” (and even made an acting cameo in a skit). One Direction also sang and acted on the episode of Nickelodeon’s “iCarly” that aired the same day.
As she conquers the Billboard 200 with the No. 1 opening of “Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded,” Nicki Minaj remains bulleted at No. 6 on the Hot 100 with “Starships.” The track post gains in digital sales (232,000, up 14%), airplay (58 million, up 13%) and on-demand streaming (723,000, up 21%).
Rounding out the Hot 100’s top 10, Flo Rida‘s “Wild Ones,” featuring Sia, holds at No. 7; Kelly Clarkson‘s former three-week No. 1 “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)” drops 5-8; Katy Perry‘s former leader “Part of Me” slips 8-9; and, Carly Rae Jepsen‘s “Call Me Maybe” bullets for a second week at No. 10.
