Holy Wars have released a video for their new single “Welcome to My Hell,” a guitar-driven, hook-heavy sing-along anthem celebratiing emotional honestly and embracing one’s imperfections.
“I enjoyed writing and performing this song so much and really wanted to convey all images the concept of hell would inspire — snakes, daemonic ballerinas, fire and cultish cloaked creatures,” lead singer Kat Leon tells Billboard of the video, created in collaboration with cinematographer Kevin Schlanser, lighting designer Erin Naifeh and editor Fre Angel.
“Welcome to My Hell” is the newest single from the LA rock outfit, formed in 2015 after the death of Leon’s parents as part of her journey into pain and darkness, ultimately leading to the formation of Holy Wars and their kinetic and frenzied live performances.
“Welcome to My Hell” is a catchy, tightly woven rock track that sonically fits somewhere between The Kills and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and delivers on stark imagery and multi-layered dichotomies. At one moment, Leon’s notion of hell is ghoulish and trades on popular themes about the afterlife, but as the video proceeds, it delves into a larger message about the pain we carry each day and how our emotions can cast us with self-doubt and depression.
“The hell in this song and video is less about the hell we have been told about, but more about the hell that exists in one’s mind,” Leon tells Billboard. “I believe hell is what we create and we all live in our own personal hell at different times.”
Like Holy Wars’ previous single “Legend,” “Welcome to My Hell” is a maze of dark symbolism, with masked ballerinas and fire breathers acting as a commentary of society’s unrealistic expectations around beauty, while cloaked figures in black-and-white speak to the balance of light and dark within all of us.
“’Welcome to my Hell’ taunts the listener to come inside and see one’s hell as a way of saying out loud… no bullsh–… no fake smile… this is me,” Leon tells Bilboard. “It’s an anthem for those who are sick of hiding their true feelings in the shadows and welcomes you to be the beautiful imperfection you are.”
