Hispanic radio pioneer McHenry Taylor Tichenor died Saturday (Jan. 3) of natural causes in Round Rock, Texas. He was 76.
Tichenor managed the family broadcasting business, Tichenor Media System, which owned the country’s first Spanish-language station KGBT/McAllen, Texas, in the ’60s. He was named president of TMS in 1967. In 1997 TMS merged with Heftel Broadcasting to form Hispanic Broadcasting Corp., the largest Hispanic broadcasting company in the country, with 38 properties. HBC merged with Univision Communications in 2004, which gave birth to Univision Radio.
Mac Tichenor Sr. is survived by his five children, McHenry T. Tichenor Jr., Warren White Tichenor, Jean Tullis Tichenor, William Edward Tichenor and David Tucker Tichenor.
Services for Mr. Tichenor are scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 7, at 11:00 a.m. at Mont Meta Memorial Park in San Benito, Texas, reports The Dallas Morning News.
