In a day when the question “what is real rap?” stirs heated debates on the regular, an international team of 14 rappers are here to declare that “hip-hop is hip-hop.”
Billboard is excited to exclusively reveal that San E has enlisted 13 fellow MCs from around the world to participate in “#HIPHOPISHIPHOP.” The single represents 14 MCs from 14 different countries who express their love of hip-hop music and culture in their own language and style on one track. Check out the official teaser for the single and video below:
Led by South Korea’s own San E — who rose to major fame with K-pop/rap hits like “Break Up Dinner,” “A Midsummer Night’s Sweetness” and “Body Language” — “#HIPHOPISHIPHOP” is described as a movement to unite the world with rap music regardless of race, nationality, language or even sex.
The impressive roster also boasts veteran American MC/producer KRS-One, Finland’s award-winning rapper Redrama, Wales’ Mr Phormula, Japan’s Julian Nagano, India’s Adx, Italy’s Strike the Head, Bosnia’s Frenkie, Taiwan’s Mr. Skin, Singapore’s Pendekar, Portugal’s Valete, Indonesia’s Yacko, Bangladesh’s SadmAnn and Egypt’s Deeb.
Inspired in part by “We Are the World,” the superstar charity single released both in 1985 and in 2010, “#HIPHOPISHIPHOP” looks to follow in a similar vein and help those around the world in need. All profits from the track will be donated to children’s education through UNICEF.
“#HIPHOPISHIPHOP” will premiere via its official video music next week, March 3, on Billboard. In the meantime, watch a shoutout video for the project featuring hip-hop honchos like DJ Premier, Rook of J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League, DJ Don Cannon and many more voicing their support for the upcoming global track.
