Hipgnosis Songs, the music IP investment company launched by Merck Mercuriadis, former manager of Beyoncé and Guns N’ Roses among others, has acquired the music catalog of country producer Michael Knox.
Well known for his work with Jason Aldean, Knox has served as producer on eight albums for the reigning Academy of Country Music artist of the decade. Four of those albums reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Top 200 Albums chart. Thanks to Aldean’s work with Knox, together their collaborations have sold over 35 million singles and amassed 18 million albums.
“Jason Aldean is undoubtedly country music’s most important artist of the last 15 years,” Mercuriadis said in a statement. “Behind him stands Michael Knox, who is arguably the best ‘record man’ in Nashville with the responsibility of identifying great songs and producing great recordings. It’s an honor to welcome Michael into the Hipgnosis family. We are very excited to work with Michael, Jason, Jason’s management team, the peermusic team and Broken Bow. This is just the beginning of our endeavors in Nashville where we have the greatest respect for the creative community and its incomparable tradition of great songs!”
The acquisition of Knox’s catalog follows Hipgnosis’ recent catalog addition of Ari Levine, the co-writer behind many of Bruno Mars’ biggest hits including Mars’ U.S. No. 1s “Just The Way You Are”, “Grenade”, ‘When I Was Your Man” and “Locked Out of Heaven,” which became the first single to top the Billboard Hot 100, Radio Songs, Digital Songs and On-Demand Songs charts simultaneously in 2012. Hipgnosis also acquired the full catalog of Eurythmics co-founder Dave Stewart.
“I am excited to be a part of the Hipgnosis movement. Merck has shown a lot of excitement and appreciation for my 20 years of hard work,” Knox said. “It’s difficult letting go of something I love so much but finding someone as passionate about music as I am, made this transition a lot easier.”
In 2018 the country producer, who has also worked with Thomas Rhett, Kelly Clarkson, Luke Bryan, Eric Church and Miranda Lambert, among others, launched his own label imprint. Music Knox Records serves as a new venture with BMG. In addition to his role as producer, Knox serves as senior vice president of independent publisher peermusic Nashville.
