Several notable hip-hop artists are dropping new albums this week, led by up-and-coming Houston rapper Chamillionaire’s “The Sound of Revenge.” After appearing on countless mix tapes and rising to prominence alongside Houston artists like Mike Jones and Slim Thug, Chamillionaire rounded up guest appearances from Bun B, Krayzie Bone, Killer Mike, Scarface and Lil Wayne for the project.
Meanwhile, rapper Talib Kweli has inked a one-album deal with Koch for the release this week of “Right About Now.” Led by the single “Right About Now,” the set features guest appearances by Kweli’s longtime Black Star colleague Mos Def plus Jean Grae and Papoose, among others. Kweli remains signed as a solo artist to Warner Bros., with whom his Blacksmith Music imprint is affiliated.
On the new label front, OutKast principal Big Boi launches his Purple Ribbon imprint via Virgin this week with the compilation “Got Purp, Vol. 2.” Led by the single “Kryptonite” featuring Big Boi, Killer Mike, C-Bone and Rock D, it also sports contributions from Bubba Sparxxx and Goodie Mob. “I’m going to try to bring the whole family back together like Voltron,” Big Boi says with a laugh.
Lastly, Linkin Park principal Mike Shinoda unveils his hip-hop side project, Fort Minor, with the Machine Shop/Warner Bros. Album, “The Rising Tied.” The set finds Shinoda playing nearly every instrument and receiving assistance from Common, John Legend, the Roots’ Black Thought, Kenna and Linkin Park DJ Joe Hahn.
