Following Taylor Swift‘s take-no-prisoners speech at Billboard’s 2019 Women In Music event, where she called out institutionalized sexism and a music industry that enables “toxic male privilege” while accepting Billboard’s Woman of the Decade honor, one very high-profile fan is publicly expressing her love for Swift’s words.
The Friday (Dec. 13) morning after the Los Angeles event, Hillary Clinton wished Swift a happy birthday and called out one line from the speech that particularly resonated with her.
“Love this line from Taylor Swift, upon accepting her Billboard ‘Woman of the Decade’ Award: ‘As for me, lately I’ve been focusing less on what they say I can’t do and more on doing whatever the hell I want.’ Congratulations on the honor, Taylor (and happy birthday)!” Clinton wrote, adding the hashtag “#gutsywomen.”
Back in 2015, Clinton penned an essay for Billboard’s Women In Music issue, paying tribute to that year’s Woman of the Year Lady Gaga and other 2015 honorees.
