As a crew of back-up singers once sang: “Aaron, oh Aaron, What are we going to do with you?”
For millennials who spent their pre-teen years watching Lizzie McGuire, teen pop star Aaron Carter and Hilary Duff were a match made in early-aughts heaven — or at least a perfectly color-coordinated music video.
When the two teens broke up (allegedly over his relationship with Lindsay Lohan, in case this story wasn’t 2004 enough), Duff remained mum. But this past year, after Duff separated from her husband, Carter started talking about wanting to win her back, calling the breakup a huge regret and writing the kind of whine-y tweets that make even high school girls want to use the block button.

For a bit, Duff just ignored him, but now the singer is finally weighing in on the weird Twitter talk. In an interview with Buzzfeed, the publication asked her a very important, direct question: “Aaron Carter keeps declaring his love for you, how do you feel about it?”
“I was not expecting this question,” Duff replied. “He does, I keep seeing that, that he keeps doing that. I don’t know how I feel. I mean, that was so long ago, and obviously I’m still married, and I have a baby and we kind of just …”
“… Don’t know each other?” Buzzfeed helpfully supplied.
“Yeah, don’t know each other … so … yeah.”
So…yeah. For now, the relationship remains so yesterday (or so a decade ago).
