The gang’s all in this together…again!
Hard to believe, but today (Jan. 20) it has been 10 years since High School Musical premiered on Disney Channel and we all learned a little something about musicals, friendship, and all-powerful brother/sister duos.
To celebrate, Disney is airing High School Musical again tonight, along with reunion footage that took place this past Sunday between original cast members/Wildcats Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale, Lucas Grabeel, Corbin Bleu, and Monique Coleman. (Zac Efron will appear via pre-taped message.)
“It is so surreal being here,” Hudgens says in the special. “It is crazy to me that ten years has gone by, and I see this cast and I feel like it was yesterday. I still love them so much, from the bottom of my heart. It was such a whirlwind – it’s just the best memories.”
The reunion finds the gang — who, in addition to HSM also made High School Musical 2 for the network, as well as the feature film High School Musical 3 — reminiscing about their time on set, and their reactions to what became a worldwide phenomenon.
“His vision was insane,” Tisdale recalls about director/choreographer Kenny Ortega. “When I read the script, I thought that it was a cute movie, but every day I would come to set, there was a detail that he would put into the scene that you would never think of. Just his vision and his ideas and being so creative were just so inspiring. He really was the heart of this movie.”
Also the heart of the movie? The chemistry between the main six, which has endeared them all to a whole generation of fans – who, thanks to social media, are only getting more vocal about their support for the fun franchise. (Any movie that has both a singing basketball game and all-school cafeteria dance party is bound to pick up passionate fans.)
“It’s been amazing over the last 10 years to watch social media become as big as it has and to see all of the fan pages pop up and that it’s still very active and alive,” Coleman explains.
“They’re still so supportive over everything we’re doing,” Tisdale says. “They’re always there, which is so amazing.”
