Emerging duo Haulm create minimalist electronic music with a singer-songwriter spirit. Comprised of Austin-based vocalist-composer JT Norton and Brooklyn producer Reed Kackley (a.k.a. BAILE), the duo first arrived with the debut EPs Stay for Me (2018) and Posture (2019). Signed to Grand Jury Music (Day Wave, Twin Peaks), they’ve since toured with Honne, zimmer, and Polo & Pan.
Tuesday (Oct. 20), Haulm returns with their new single “Call the Waves.” Billboard has the exclusive first play of the new music video, streaming below.
“We wrote ‘Call the Waves’ the night of March 12, after the news that President Trump met with [Brazilian] President Bolsonaro, who was potentially COVID-19 positive,” JT says. “The idea that these two world leaders, who both downplayed the virus to the detriment of their people, could potentially become victims of it smacked of a kind of poetic justice.”
Directed by Zachary Sprague, the clip was shot at dawn under Route 35 in Austin, Texas. It, too, was inspired by President Trump’s mishandling of the COVID-19 pandemic, and, JT explains, the “utter powerlessness we feel as citizens of a collapsing democracy.”
