Harry Potter author J. K. Rowling has a history of charitable work. She previously sold the original book edition of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, written in the style of an authentic Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry textbook owned by Potter, to benefit British charity Comic Relief.
Now, Rowling lends her fame and words to the victims, survivors, and families of the Pule Nightclub tragedy that left 49 dead and 53 injured in Orlando, Fl., in June 2016. Love is Love is a 144-page comic celebrating the diversity of humanity in a collection of moving stories and animations. Heroes of the comic world have come together across platforms, and all proceeds of the book support the Pulse cause.
For her part, Rowling gave permission for Marvel Comics’ artist Jim Lee to draw Potter, his friends Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley, and head professor Albus Dumbledore, a character who was later confirmed by Rowling as homosexual. The four appear under a rainbow above a quote from Dumbledore that reads “differences of habit and language are nothing at all if our aims are identical and our hearts are open,” taken from Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
