Hamilton, the red-hot Broadway musical with book, music and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda, is coming to the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood — but not until the summer after next.
The production is scheduled to open on Aug. 11, 2017, at the historic Hollywood Boulevard venue and run through Dec. 30, 2017.
Hamilton premiered off-Broadway in January 2015 at the Public Theater and segued in August to Broadway’s Richard Rodgers Theatre, like the Pantages owned by the Nederlander Organization.
It has become the toughest ticket in town, and according to The Broadway League, has grossed nearly $43 million through Jan. 17.
In December, lead producer Jeffrey Seller announced that Hamilton would begin performances in Chicago — its first engagement outside New York — on Sept. 27, 2016, for an open-ended gig at the newly renamed PrivateBank Theatre, which is operated by the Nederlander arm Broadway in Chicago.
Inspired by Ron Chernow’s 2004 biography of founding father Alexander Hamilton, the country’s first treasury secretary, Hamilton, directed by Thomas Kail, features a score that blends hip-hop, jazz, blues, rap, R&B and Broadway tunes. Miranda also stars in the title role.
Hamilton is anchoring a 2016-17 season at the Pantages that kicks off Nov. 1 with Hedwig and the Angry Inch, followed by Rodgers & Hammerstein’s The King and I, Finding Neverland, An American in Paris, The Bodyguard and The Book of Mormon.
