Halsey has spent the month of February reflecting on her pregnancy and how it “has leveled my perception of gender entirely,” she wrote while documenting her journey since she first showed off her baby bump.
The Manic singer opened up about the “strange” feeling of watching herself change so quickly in an Instagram post Thursday (Feb. 18), which featured pictures of her basking in the sun in a bikini that shows off her adorable “baby” ink on her growing belly. The 26-year-old artist is expecting her first child with screenwriter Alev Aydin.
“February is the shortest month, but the days seem like they are taking very long. Butttttt also going so fast?! I’ve been thinking lots about my body. it’s strange to watch yourself change so quickly. I thought pregnancy would give me very strong, binary feelings about ‘womanhood’ but truly it has leveled my perception of gender entirely,” she wrote. “My sensitivity to my body has made me hyper aware of my humanness and that’s all. Doing a remarkable thing. And it’s grand. I hope the feeling lasts. I cook a lot, sleep even more, and read lotssss of books. I miss my family. And you guys too! bye for now.”
Fellow pop star and new mom Katy Perry emphasized the need for rest in her reassuring comment underneath Halsey’s post: “You’re about to perform a real miracle, get that rest and just be! I love you!” Model Emily Ratajkowski, who’s also expecting her first child, reiterated the “sleep” part with a string of heart emojis.
Halsey penned an additional comment to her post about how she woke up to a new reality of pregnancy instead of the pre-conceived expectation of waking up like a “fertility goddess.”
“More on the subject: I thought there would be a lot of expectation or pressure on me to wake up everyday feeling like some ‘girly-girly fertility goddess’, but instead I wake up and eat when I’m hungry, sleep when I’m tired, and focus on growing a human. And that is all I expect myself to do. Liberating!” she added.
The “Without Me” singer announced her pregnancy last month while wearing a rainbow crochet crop top that served as a subtle reminder of her previous pregnancy loss, with the expected child being a “rainbow baby.” She opened up about suffering a miscarriage onstage before she even had time to fully process she was pregnant in a 2018 interview on The Doctors. Halsey also shared that she was suffering from endometriosis, which can cause infertility, and she underwent surgery for it in 2017.
The then-23-year-old singer also said during The Doctors interview that she decided to freeze her eggs, saying, “I need to be aggressive about protecting my fertility, about protecting myself.” Last month, Halsey proudly showed off the scars on her lower abdomen from the surgery on her Instagram Story. “The scars that got me this angel,” she wrote, adding the hashtag #endowarrior.
