Broadway musical “Hairspray” nabbed 13 nominations to lead the field for the 57th annual Tony Awards. Dance musical “Movin’ Out,” based on the songs of Billy Joel, earned 10 nods. Both will compete for the best musical award, along with “Amour” and “A Year With a Frog and a Toad.”
“Hairspray,” based on the 1998 John Waters film of the same name, also a netted best original score nomination, as well as best performance notices for leading actor Harvey Fierstein and actress Marissa Jaret Winokur.
Joel and Stuart Malina are up for best orchestrations for their work on “Movin’ Out,” while Twyla Tharp is among the best choreography nominees for her contribution to the musical. Lead actors John Seyla and Elizabeth Parkinson also earned best performance nominations.
“Nine the Musical,” inspired by Fellini’s 1963 film “8 1/2,” garnered eight nominations, including best revival and a best performance nod for male lead Antonio Banderas, and for featured female actresses Mary Stuart Masterson and Chita Rivera. The Broadway version of Puccini’s “La Boheme” received six nominations, including best director of a musical for Baz Luhrmann.
