When Guy Gerber and Puff Daddy released their collaborative album of electronic music this summer, it cast a curious spell over the dance music industry. They were an unconventional pair, to say the least, and the album, titled 11 11, lacked the super-charged dancefloor bangers one might expect when an Ibiza tech-house DJ and rap mogul join forces.
But those familiar with Gerber’s music know that bangers were never the goal. Instead of making a heavy-handed play for the dance music charts, the album — an imaginative compilation of sexy afterhours jams that he affectionately calls their “odd couple project” — has flown coolly under the radar. And that, frankly, is a little more Gerber’s speed.
“These tracks are not meant to rock big stages,” he told Billboard in an interview ahead of the album’s release in August. “They’re for the weird hours.”
Now, he’s hitting the road for a North American tour based on his famous weekly dance party in Ibiza, called Rumors. The residency swaps formal line-ups and mega-clubs for mysterious, low-key sets on the beach — and while the U.S. tour is concentrated on clubs, it will aim for a similar vibe. It kicks off on Oct. 24 in Los Angeles and has 13 stops, including New York City on Halloween and Miami during Art Basel in December. Gerber was loath to give away many details but said fans can expect long, patient sets that will weave 11 11 in with his own independent material.
“My concerts aren’t these epic things that are supposed to be the best parties in the world,” he said. “They’re a little more intimate, a little more quirky. We’re trying to take the Rumors experience all over the world.”
For new fans, the shows will offer a taste of the dance music culture that Gerber, who is from Israel but lives in Ibiza, came up in. Once it wraps, he plans to put out a compilation of 11 11 remixes, which will include reworks by Soul Clap, Jamie Jones and Visionquest before refocusing on his own music, starting with a single featuring French DJ Miss Kittin.
