Juan Luis Guerra, a veteran star with a flair for innovation, is the lead nominee for the eighth Latin Grammy Awards. Guerra picked album of the year and merengue album of the year nods for “La Llave de mi Corazon, (EMI Televisa)” an album that stretches the bounds of contemporary bachata and merengue.
The hit song of the same name, which spent several weeks at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs chart, was nominated in three categories, including record and song of the year. Guerra will also be honored as the person of the year by the Latin Recording Academy.
Puerto Rican star Ricky Martin and urban duo Calle 13 snagged four nominations each. Martin, who is enjoying a comeback of sorts with his “MTV Unplugged” album, got two nods, including album of the year for that recording, as well as record of the year for the single “Tu Recuerdo.” Calle 13, winner’s of last year’s best new artist award, are up for album of the year and best urban music album for the irreverent “Residente o Visitante” (Sony BMG).
Artists up for three awards each include Miguel Bose, who was honored with a Lifetime Achievement award at the 2006 Billboard Latin Music Awards, and Venezuelan troubadour Franco De Vita.
The Latin Grammy Awards will take place Nov. 8 in Las Vegas and will air live on the Univision network. Winners will be determined by votes from members of the Latin Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences.
