The Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack was one of the year’s most beloved soundtracks, thanks to its limelight role in the blockbuster film and impeccable selection of songs, including Blue Swede‘s “Hooked on a Feeling,” Norman Greenbaum‘s “Spirit In the Sky” and The Five Stairsteps‘ “O-O-H Child.”
Now, for Wednesday only, that undeniably awesome soundtrack — which spent two weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart earlier this year — The Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Mix, Vol. 1, is available for free download via Google Play.
The film’s director James Gunn also released the track list to his personal on-set playlist called “Awesome Mix, Vol. 0,” which he posted on Facebook Wednesday. That includes Mindless Self Indulgence, Andrew W.K., Aceyalone, My Chemical Romance and The Old 97’s, among others.
For the film’s Boot of Jemiah bar scene, he explained in that post, sound engineer Simon Hayes asked Gunn to put “together an AWESOME playlist of high energy party tunes. So I did, featuring some of my favorite tunes.” Check that out here.
Gunn also explained how some of the music was used on set, writing, “I chose the songs on Awesome Mix ahead of time, and even included them in the script. Where possible, the songs were played live on set – when you see the gang walking down the hall to Cherry Bomb, they were actually walking down the hall to Cherry Bomb. Likewise, the score by Tyler Bates was written largely before we started shooting, and we blared that sucker on set so the actors and cameras would all move in unison.”
