It’s April 20th, the sky is blue, and you’re in the mood for a feel-good jam with just enough reggae influence to fit the vibe. Gryffin has your back on this most special of days, and even if it’s not April 20th, you’re going to want this “Winnebago” to slide up to your door and take you on a magical journey of sun-soaked sound.
It’s a song that started in the mind of Gryffin‘s collaborator Daniel Wilson.
“Me, Justin and Jeremiah Raisen (aka SadPony), and Luke Niccoli came together for a session one day to write a new track,” Wilson says in an emailed statement. “After laying down some melodies, I came up with the name for the song, and together we created the concept. It’s a feel good song, sort of an anthem for anyone to just do what they need to do to have fun with people they care about. To me, a Winnebago represented something very earthy and homegrown, which I thought was relatable for most people (whether they knew it by name or not, they’ve most likely seen a Winnebago on the road before)—a real experience that didn’t require a lot of money or a nice car to just get away from everything. “Winnebago is about being broke but having fun anyway.”
He played the tune for Gryffin, who immediately responded to its infectious smiley-ness.
“’Winnebago’ is the most ambitious song I’ve put out in my career thus far,” Gryffin says. “Being a Cali kid, it was always a dream of mine to create a song that had influences of reggae fusion and dance. When I first heard an early version of the song, I immediately connected with Daniel Wilson’s voice and lyrics and the vibe he gave off. Although it felt like a departure from my usual sound, there was something so special and fun about the record that I wanted to push myself creatively and make something that felt fresh and different.”
“Winnebago” is the kind of song you’d expect a cartoon character to blast with the windows down on its favorite day off. It’s all smiles and easygoing attitude. Quinn XCII hopped on the tune as soon as Gryffin played it for him, which was definitely the right move.
“Gryffin is a friend and an artist I’ve respected for a long time, so I’m excited we finally got the chance to work on music together,” Quinn XCII says. “As an artist that is influenced by so many genres, I love the idea of working on records that bring in new elements with artists who come from a different musical space than I do. With summer around the corner, we figured it was the perfect time to release a song like ‘Winnebago.'”
